The Big Apple Softball League would like to take a moment to take the league for all of their generous donations to the Grizzlies Give Back Campaign. A Special thank you goes out to the Grizzlies own Scott Nabb who organized the whole event with the help of his teammates and other BASL volunteers. The league members along with their friends and family members came by in droves to donate clothing, bags, backpacks and money, all of it going straight towards the Ali Forney Center.
LGBTQ youth comprise up to 40% of the homeless youth population in NYC. These kids experience greater levels of sexual assualt, domestic/dating/stalking violence, trauma, HIV infection, mental health issues and substance abuse than their heterosexual counterparts.
Clients with the Ali Forney Center come from all walks of life. More than 80% are kicked out of their homes for being who they are. The remainder run away due to abuse, neglect, or a combination of rejection and abuse. About half of their clients come to them from other states and some are even from around the world. 49% of their clients are male, 29% are female, 22% are transgender, 60% are African American, 30% are Latino and 10% are white. 90% are uninsured and the majority do not even have proper identification. At least 20% are HIV positive.
All of the money donated from various teams to the GoFundMe the Grizzlies had set up went towards brand new clothing, underwear, backpacks, towels and bedding purchased from Target. Scott is still organizing the drop off of all the donations but recently packed up everything and has tentatively set a date for late September.
Thank you Big Apple Softball League and the Grizzlies for putting together this campaign.
